Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)
Definition
The process of improving a website or landing page to increase the percentage of visitors who take a desired action, like making a purchase.
Example Use Case
A software company tweaks its pricing page layout and sees a 15% increase in demo sign-ups.
Conversion rate optimization is the systematic work of getting more of your existing visitors to take the action you want. Because it improves results from traffic you already have, it often pays back faster than acquiring more of it.
The method is a loop: find where visitors drop off, form a hypothesis about why, change one thing, measure, and keep what works. Research comes before testing — session recordings, heatmaps, and user interviews tell you which problems are worth solving, while testing tells you whether your fix actually worked.
Two failure modes dominate. The first is jumping to redesigns without evidence, which produces opinions rather than improvements. The second is running tests too small to be conclusive and acting on noise. CRO rewards patience and discipline more than creativity.
