Domain Authority (DA)

Definition

A metric by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank in search engines based on backlinks and SEO factors.

Example Use Case

A new blog works on building high-quality backlinks to improve its DA score.

Domain authority is a third-party metric, produced by Moz, that estimates how strong a site’s link profile is and how likely it is to rank. It is not a measurement that search engines use or publish; it is an industry-made proxy, and understanding that distinction prevents a lot of wasted effort.

Its main use is comparison. DA is helpful for judging whether a site is a realistic target for outreach or a plausible competitor, and for tracking your own profile over time. Because it is calculated on a relative scale, scores shift even when your own site has not changed, so small movements carry little meaning.

Treat it as a leading indicator rather than a target. Chasing the number directly tends to produce low-quality link acquisition, which does none of the things that actually improve visibility. Similar services publish their own equivalents under different names, and each has its own bias.
