Engagement Rate
Definition
The level of interaction content receives from users relative to reach or followers.
Example Use Case
A fashion brand monitors engagement on Instagram posts to refine its content strategy.
Engagement rate expresses interactions as a share of the people who could have interacted — reach, impressions, or follower count. Turning raw likes or comments into a ratio makes posts of different sizes comparable and reveals whether an audience is actually paying attention.
The definition is not standardised, which is its main weakness. Platforms and tools differ on what counts as an interaction and what counts as the denominator, so figures that look comparable often are not. When reporting, state the formula you used.
As a metric it is best treated as a health signal rather than a business outcome. High engagement with no commercial result can mean the content is entertaining rather than persuasive. It is most useful for spotting which topics and formats earn attention, before those insights are applied to content that needs to convert.
