JavaScript SEO
Definition
Optimizing JavaScript-based websites to ensure search engines can properly index and rank them.
Example Use Case
A tech startup uses server-side rendering to improve its JavaScript-heavy site's SEO.
JavaScript SEO is the work of making sure content that is rendered by JavaScript is actually seen and indexed by search engines. It exists because crawlers historically saw the initial HTML only; anything injected afterwards could be invisible no matter how good the page looked to a visitor.
Rendering is the core issue. Server-side rendering or static generation delivers complete HTML up front, which removes the problem entirely. Client-side rendering leaves the crawler to execute your scripts, and while modern crawlers do this, it consumes crawl budget and introduces points of failure that plain HTML does not have.
The reliable diagnostic is to disable JavaScript in a browser and look at the page, or inspect what a crawler would see before scripts run. If the primary content, internal links, and metadata are absent, search engines are working with a worse version of the site than your visitors are. Core content should render without scripts wherever practical.
