Keyword Cannibalization

Definition

When multiple pages on a website compete for the same keyword, reducing SEO effectiveness.

Example Use Case

An SEO consultant restructures a blog's content to prevent multiple pages from ranking for 'best CRM software.'

Keyword cannibalization happens when several pages on the same site target the same search intent, so they compete with each other instead of with competitors. Search engines have to choose one to rank, and the signals pointing at each are diluted across the group.

The symptoms are indirect: rankings that fluctuate for no clear reason, a page that ranks below a weaker one, or several URLs taking turns in the same position over time. It is especially common after years of publishing without an editorial map, when a new article covers ground an older one already occupies.

The remedies are consolidation or differentiation. Often the right move is to merge overlapping pages into a single stronger resource and redirect the weaker URLs to it. Where the intents are genuinely different — a definition versus a how-to, for example — keeping both is correct as long as each is clearly aimed at its own query.
