Marketing Automation

Definition

Using software to automate repetitive marketing tasks like email sequences and social media posting.

Example Use Case

A B2B SaaS company uses HubSpot to automate lead nurturing emails.

Marketing automation runs repetitive marketing work without a person initiating each step: sending a welcome sequence, moving a contact between stages when they meet a condition, or publishing scheduled posts. The point is not to remove the human but to stop spending human attention on tasks that follow fixed rules.

The most valuable patterns are triggered rather than time-based. A message sent because someone abandoned a form or completed a purchase is relevant by construction; a monthly newsletter sent because the calendar says so is not. Good automation encodes a decision a marketer would make anyway.

Its characteristic failure is scale with no judgement. Automation makes it easy to send more, to more people, with less review — which is how brands end up with overlapping sequences and recipients receiving several contradictory messages. Map which sequences a contact can be in at once before adding another.
