Page Speed Optimization

Definition

Improving website load times to enhance user experience and SEO rankings.

Example Use Case

A tech blog compresses images and implements lazy loading to speed up its website.

Page speed optimization is the work of making pages appear and become usable as quickly as possible. It matters for two reasons at once: visitors abandon slow pages, and speed is a factor in how pages are assessed for search visibility.

What people notice is not the total transfer size but the moments when the page first shows something meaningful and when it stops shifting around. A page that renders its main content quickly and then settles is perceived as fast even if heavier assets are still arriving, which is why optimising the critical path matters more than shaving bytes everywhere.

The usual wins are unglamorous: serving images at the size they are displayed rather than several times larger, lazy-loading anything below the fold, removing render-blocking scripts, and caching properly. Measure before and after with real-user data, because synthetic scores and actual experience often disagree.
