Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Definition

The practice of increasing website visibility in organic search results.

Example Use Case

A travel blog optimizes content with keywords and backlinks to improve search rankings and attract more organic visitors.

Search engine optimization is the practice of making a site more likely to appear, and to be chosen, in unpaid search results. It combines technical work — ensuring pages can be crawled and rendered — with content work aimed at matching what people actually search for.

The field splits usefully into three parts. Technical SEO covers accessibility to crawlers, site structure, and speed. On-page SEO concerns an individual page’s content, headings, and metadata. Off-page SEO is largely about links and reputation. Most progress comes from getting the first two right rather than pursuing the third aggressively.

The durable principle is that optimization serves the reader first. Tactics that satisfy a crawler while disappointing the visitor tend to work briefly and then fail, either because search engines adapt or because the visitors do not convert. Building something genuinely worth finding remains the foundation.
