XML Sitemap

Definition

A file that helps search engines understand website structure and content.

Example Use Case

A blogging platform generates an XML sitemap to improve SEO and ensure all posts are discoverable.

An XML sitemap is a file listing the URLs on a site that you would like crawled, along with optional hints such as when each page last changed. It gives search engines a direct inventory of your content instead of relying on them to discover pages by following links.

It is most valuable where discovery is genuinely difficult: large sites with deep or poorly linked sections, new sites with few inbound links, and pages that are reachable only through JavaScript or a search interface. On a small, well-linked site a sitemap changes little, but it costs almost nothing and removes a class of avoidable problem.

Accuracy is what makes it useful. Sitemaps containing URLs that redirect, return errors, or should not be indexed waste crawl attention and can misrepresent the site. Generating the file from the site’s actual routes at build time, and updating its lastmod values honestly, keeps it trustworthy. Reference it from robots.txt so crawlers can find it.
