Link Building

Definition

Acquiring backlinks from other websites to improve SEO authority.

Example Use Case

A finance blog writes a guest post on a major business site, linking back to its own resources.

Link building is the deliberate effort to get other sites to link to yours, on the basis that those citations influence search visibility. It is persuasive work rather than technical work: someone else has to decide your page is worth referencing.

The tactics that hold up over time are the ones where the link is a side effect of something genuinely useful — original research others cite, a reference page people return to, a tool that solves a specific problem. Outreach then makes the right people aware of material that already deserves a link.

The tactics that fail are the shortcuts: bought links, private networks, and automated comment or directory placement. These violate search engine guidelines, and the resources spent on them are better directed at the content. A handful of relevant, editorially given links from respected sites is worth more than a large volume of low-quality ones. See backlinks and domain authority.
